Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from my list of upsets victories.  It is not a big upset, and it is not a great victory.  However, I chose this one because I thought it illustrates the difference between strategic thinking and tactical thinking.

I was talking with Anthea Carson NN about this idea, and she said that she should get this on video.  So, she begged me to go over a game and talk about stategic plans in the endgame since I "know nothing about Grandmaster games."

Despite her bizarre persuasion skills, I agreed to the interview.  However, I don't think I picked the right game.  We were waiting for her son to finish his game, and the games I had most handy were the ones I had recently put in the Games link.

So, when I found my upset of Glenn Miller, I thought that it would have been so much better.  Here is the "center">

Glenn played b5, dropped the rook, and resigned.

My first thought was, "What a gift!  Thank you!"  However, on second glance, I realized Glenn probably had a plan and got too focused on it and missed a simple response.  I think he was thinking strategically when he should have been thinking tactically.  Here is what I mean:

Strategically, he has his rooks behind his pawns, which is the right place to be if they get passed.  Also, he has a pawn majority on the queenside, which is the right place to create a passed pawn.

So, now he just has to figure out how to get one of his pawns around my b pawn, and wha-la, he has created a huge threat of promotion.

Tactically, he should have seen, prior to pushing a5, that his b pawn is already pinned to his rook.  Also, pushing a5 just creates another pin when the rook on c7 moves to a7.

So, his pawn promotion plan is hampered by double pins.  However, both pins are on the a3 rook, which can now move to the open c file.  He'll lose a pawn, but it is better than losing a rook, and he can push b5 now to get his promotion threat and maybe get back in the game.

The other possibility is that he was low in time and panicked.
