Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from the Colorado Springs Chess Club's Tuesday night event, the May Swiss 90.  I was paired against a familiar opponent, Mark McGough.  Mark is a regular on Tuesday night and my most common opponent since 2010.  It has been a good match-up for me, and Mark was about to break a milestone in the annuals of my chess database.

I have a report in my database that I run to tell me what is my record against all my different opponents over the years.  For a long time, Dean Brown was the player who I had beaten the most often.  It seemed like a record that could not be broken, as I have been playing Dean since 1997 until present.  However, Mark was on the verge of over-taking Dean.

DEAN, 65.0 - 10.0, -34, 1479, 1997-2016

MARK, 64.5 - 11.5, +137, 1764, 2010-2016

However, Mark was not willing to take his beating like usual.  He took his time and tried to play very precise without taking any unnecessary risks.  He caught me in an impulsive touch move to gain a Pawn, and got me into a worse position.  I tried to create some tactics to get a mistake out of him, and I had a chance to get back into the game.

White to move

See diagram and answer here:

Unfortunately, I did not find the best move and went on to lose the game.  I had another shot at Mark on Friday, but he pulled out another win.  I guess he is just not willing to take his place at the whipping post.
