Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from my first scholastic chess tournament.  You would think that someone with 834 tournament chess games under his belt would have played that first scholastic game many years ago when his number of games could have been counted on one hand.  However, you'd be wrong.

Nothing I do in chess is normal.  My first tournament game was in 1998 when I was 28.  My first scholastic tournament game was last Saturday when I was 45.  How is that even possible?  Well, I will try to make a long story short.

I was at the Colorado Springs Chess Club on Tuesday night running a monthly tournament for the members.  Since the number of players who showed up that night was even, I sat out.  Without a game to occupy my mind, I thought about how becoming a Tournament Director has made it difficult to get the 8 rating points I need to hit 2100.

I hatched a plan to travel up to Denver on Saturday to play in Jesse Cohen's Summit School Of Chess' tournament.  It is a scholastic event, primarily for kids who are in high school or younger.  However, it did have an adult section.

I checked the results from their last tournament and they had about 15 adults playing in the event with several strong players.  It seemed like the perfect plan.  I even talked Alex Freeman into coming up with me for, at least, some class B competition.

The plan started to unravel when Alex Freeman checked with Jesse Cohen about the number of pre-entrants.  Zero.  Alex backed out, and I began to wonder if every adult chess player in the state was going to the Boulder Open that same weekend.

I was undaunted.  I figured that some parents had to be there since none of these tikes can drive yet.  So, I made the trip from Colorado Springs to Arvada.  When I arrived, Jesse told me that he could not get any competition closer to me than 1000 rating points away.  My plan to get 8 rating points was dead.

Of course, I still had to decide if I was going to play.  I could have withdrawn and gotten my money back.  However, I had made plans to meet my mom, who lives in Denver, for lunch after the chess tournament.  She was volunteering at the Colorado Historical Society that day and wasn't going to be done until 2:00pm.  So, I decided to stay and kill the morning playing a bunch of novice parents.

As I walked over to board one, my home for the day, I saw that I had misunderstood Jesse.  I was not playing 1000-rated adults, I was playing, as the only adult, in the adult section combined with the U1400 scholastic section.

I felt like Kramer from the TV show Seinfeld when he was a white belt in a kids' karate class.

Jerry says, "Kramer, you are fighting children?!"

Kramer replies, "We are all at the same skill level."

So, I decided to take a page from Kramer's playbook and make the best of it.  I would introduce myself to each opponent with the line, "This is my first scholastic tournament.  Go easy on me."  Nothing.  No smile, no laugh.  They all thought I was serious.  I don't think sarcasm recognition kicks in until puberty.

In fact, all these kids were incredibly friendly and very polite,  "Don't worry, you'll do fine.  This is my 70th tournament."

They had no problem with this strange presence in their section.  They seemed to welcome it.  They didn't play like I expected scholastic players to play.  They took their time and found resourceful moves when they got into trouble.  I only got one real blunder in 4 games.  They were very spiritual for such young ages, very patient and exercising a lot of self-control.

What started out as a weird day, turned out to be a great day with 4 fun games of chess with some quality people.

"But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

Matthew 19:14 (KJV)

Here is a position from my final round game with Joshua Miller.  He was the only one who went after my King, castling opposite of me and throwing Pawns in my face.  I had to take another page from Kramer's playbook, as he flung the kids across the karate class, and dominate the dojo!

White to move.

Colorado Springs Open

by TD Richard Buchanan

The Colorado Springs Open returned to the Manitou Springs City Hall on March 7-8, and was blessed with good weather and a turnout of 53. We had players from all over, including visitors from New Mexico, Nebraska, and Nevada. Family groups were in abundance: four Williams youngsters as well as the Hermans and Needhams and the usuals from the Alter, Langseth, Carson-Martinez, and McConnell families.

Mark Krowczyk astonished us all by defeating both Brian Wall and Chris Peterson and then leaving the tournament before the last round. This allowed Earle Wikle and Las Vegas expert Greg Cottle to win the tournament with scores of 4.5 points. Mark's 4 points still won him some money along with Paul Baxter with the same score. There was discussion on whether Mark was eligible for a prize, but I found a line in the rule book that says, “Unless the director decides otherwise, players who fail to complete the tournament are not eligible for prizes,” and in this case the director certainly decided otherwise. Other prize winners were Jeff Baffo, David Hufnagel, Deanna Alter, Andrew Lin, Alex Mekonnen, Mike Madsen, Jesse and Teah Williams, Mihaly Toth, and Dimitri Lopez of New Mexico.

Many of the tournament's games showed unbalanced material: e.g., a rook against a piece or two, queen vs rooks or a rook and piece(s). This led to hard fought, unpredictable games.

A few from the tournament took the chance to ride a ways up Pikes Peak on the Cog Railroad. Like last year, Daylight Savings Time started Sunday morning, forcing the players out of bed an hour earlier. But I am pleased to say that there were no Round 4 forfeits! In fact, more games were selected for publication from round 4 than any other round! Good work, folks! My only sad moment of the tournament was when I announced that the Spice of Life coffee house, a longtime supporter of Manitou Springs chess, has gone out of business.

We will be back in City Hall for the Pikes Peak Open in August and then return to the Art Center across the street for the Winter Springs Open.
