Game Of The Week
This week's game comes from one of my many losses this year. I have had a tradition of publishing 4 losses each chess season. I noticed that, with 3 newsletters left this year, I only had published 3 losses this year. So, I needed one more to keep the tradition going.
As I looked over my losses, there was one game that stood out from the rest. One, it was the longest recorded game I played this year, and two, it was a milestone for my opponent.
Back in 2011, I was trying to find my 200th chess victory. By chance, I noticed that the game coincided with another statistical anomaly: an opponent who had lost all our rated games (after a minimum of 4 games). I came up with a silly name to describe this occurrence for the newsletter.

Unfortunately, my opponent didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did. In addition, I made the situation worse by telling him the same knock-knock joke after every loss for the next three years.
"Hey Joe, knock, knock?" I asked after our next game together.
"Whose there?" Joe responded.
"Owen," I replied with a muffled giggle.
"Owen who?" Joe begrudging asked.
"Owen Nine!"
To me, this seemed like a joke that just got better with time. However, by the time I got to "Owen Sixteen," Joe was just plain furious. It was no wonder that Joe was insulted when I offered a draw in our 17th encounter with less time and a lost position. He thought I was just trying to keep the joke going.
So, I figured, if anyone deserves to have their win over me published, it is Joe. Here is a position from the game where things started to go wrong for me:

Every chess player, who plays regularly, will have an Owen List and be on someone's list. But, it is hard to beat the same person every time. The best way to get off someone's list is to keep playing. Almost everyone who started out poorly against me, eventually got off the list, sometimes gaining rating points in the process.
