Choose Wisely

Game Of The Week

At the beginning of the year, I had a dream where I was given a choice:

  • Never lose to a higher rated player
  • Always win against a lower rated player

Like a fool, I quickly chose the first one.  If I had put any thought into it, I would have realized that I just don't play enough higher rated players in Colorado Springs.  Over the years, I have slowly climbed up the ratings ladder by beating most of the players when I was higher rated and losing to the players when they were higher rated.  This worked well for me until I reached the top rung.  Now there was nobody to which I could lose.

Of course, I still would have an off-game or an off-night.  However, now it was always occuring against lower rated players.  So, I have lost a ton of rating points this year by dropping a bunch of games to lower rated players.  If I had chosen the second, I would have only lost 2 games this year.

In fact, this year I have only played two higher rated players (LM Brian Wall and Gunnar Andersen).  While I didn't lose either game and I enjoyed the benefit of my choice, at least for a little while, I can't say I made the most of it.  It was as if Moses had spoken directly to me:

"See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction."

Deuteronomy 30:15 (KJV)

And I chose the death and destruction of my rating.

Here is a position from my game against Gunnar where my choice paid off:

Black to move
