Game Of The Week
This week's game comes from the May Panera Wednesday tournament. I got to play David Silva, who just recently moved to Colorado Springs. It is always a pleasure to play someone new, as I tend to stay more focused and play better chess. I want to put a good face on Colorado Springs chess and impress our newcomers, as you never know how long they will stay around.
So, I was trying to find the best moves to finish out the game rather than just finding an easy line. When it looked to be mating, I tried to calculate what the mate was. Was it mate in 7 or mate in 8?
However, it was too hard for me. So, I just tried to play the best move I could find and not worry about the continuation. I figured my Fritz 8 would just spit out the mate when I put it in the computer.
As it turns out, Fritz wasn't that much better than me. Around move 39, I started looking for mates. Fritz quickly announced mate in 7. However, as I looked at what Fritz had come up with, it finally changed the analysis to mate in 8. So, I moved forward in the game. One move forward and Fritz jumped to mate in 10.
Now, I was beginning to think Fritz didn't know what he was doing at all. He was just pretending to be smart.
Finally, I got to a position where I could calculate the mate and Fritz agreed. See what you think:
White to move and mate in ?.
