Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from one of the oldest, ongoing tournaments in Colorado, the Colorado Springs Open.  It was played in March of this year, and was directed by Buck Buchanan.  He must spent a good deal of time going over all the games turned into the tournament director and sends them to the state chess magazine for Colorado, the Colorado Chess Informant. 

For space reasons, not all the games make it into the publication, but with the website I can save all of Buck's diligent work for posterity (see below).  Also, the website makes it easier to go over some of these games (at least for me) now.  All I have to do is highlight the pgn, copy, and paste into Fritz.  Click, click, click and I am onto the next game. 

Anyway, I noticed that Buck had commented on several games, so I asked him if he had a favorite.  This is the game he chose, and after I had pasted it into Fritz, I could see why.  You don't have to have a chess program to view it though.  You can view it online by clicking the Games link in a flash pgn viewer or you can watch the video here.

Right Move Public Chess Club

ELO Favorites tie for first place in the USCF Swiss Bout #1 held over the first two Thursdays of April at the club. Anthony Telinbacco, David Meliti and Mark McGough all tied splitting the 1st and 2nd place prize pools. Mr Al Torres walked away with the U/1600 prize. Thanks to the USCF players who participated in our very first nationally rated tournament. Next, over the last "three" Thursdays of this month, we will begin a 3-round Swiss USCF rated G/75 tourney. One rated game will be played each Thursday night for the remainder of the month. Registration begins at 6pm April 15th and closes at 6:55pm. Clocks will start at 7pm. Half point byes are available for any one round. The entry fee is $1.00 to cover rating fees.

Held concurrently with the conclusion of the USCF Swiss Bout #1, we began our informal April 2010 "club rated" G/75 swiss tourney. A new attendance record for the club was set on April 8th as many players turned out for the first round of this club event. The players will be playing three more rounds: 4/15, 4/22 & 4/29 (one game per night).  Chess books will be awarded to 1st & 2nd place at the conclusion of this 4-week event on April 29th. It is still not too late to get in on this casual tourney. You may enter round two and be given a half-point bye for round one !!!  After one round played, Gil Garrison, Jay Shuler,Ty Winkler, Russell Speicher and Travis Bradley are on the board with one point each.

Important Note....while the club does supply clocks, sets, and boards, it is recommended that USCF players bring a set just in case we happen to run out.  The club supplies 15 complete sets for your convenience. However, just about every set was in use during the last club meeting !!! We plan on ordering more sets but in the meantime it may not be a bad idea to bring a set just in case.  Thank You for your cooperation in this matter.

At our next Monday group chess lessons April 12th at Compleat Games & Hobbies, the children will learn all about pawn moves & captures, and time permitting, we will look at queen movement as well which will complete our study of piece movement and captures. Adults,we will build on what you learned last Monday by looking at one of Bobby Fischer's memorable chess games. At the conclusion of this lesson, you will have a full understanding of how to set up the board and how all the pieces move and capture.
