Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from the Colorado Springs Chess Club's "Player's Choice" night in July.  Typically, the 1st Tuesday of the month is Speed Chess (G5).  The 2nd Tuesday is USCF-rated Quads (G30).  The 3rd Tuesday is Quick-rated Swiss (G20).  The 4th Tuesday is "Something Different," like simuls, thematic events, bughouse, lectures, etc.  When a month ends with a 5th Tuesday, the club lets the attendees decided what kind of chess they would like to play.

Gunnar Andersen and Isaac Martinez wanted rated Quads.  However, we had an odd number of players, and with myself sitting out, we still did not have enough players for everyone to play in a Quad since it requires a multiple of 4.  So, we created one USCF-rated Quad and an unrated Swiss.

I was going to sit out and work on my newsletter, for which I was struggling to find a game I wanted to publish.  However, Anthea Carson NN decided to withdraw from the USCF-rated Quad after losing to Gunnar and having to face her son and Mark McGough in a bad mood.  So, I replaced her in the Quad and got an idea for a game to publish at the same time.

I got 2 wins in the Quad and realized that I had gone over 400 victories in USCF-rated play (I am counting half victories too).  It was in 2009 that I joined the 300 club (http://cschess.webs.com/apps/blog/show/2919825-300-club) by beating Gary Bagstad when I was rated 1990.  In those 3 years and 100 victories since then, I finally broke the expert barrier (2003) only to quickly fall back under and plummet to 1897 before getting my act together again.
