Looking For Draws In All The Wrong Positions

Posted by Paul Anderson on May 31, 2016 at 5:25 PM

Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from the final round of the May Swiss 90.  It was down to Mark McGough and Brian Rountree for 1st place.  Mark needed a win to jump past Brian.  Brian just needed a draw to lock out Mark.

I kind of expected the game to go deep into the night.  Both Mark and Brian are known to maximize their clocks.  It doesn't matter how long the game goes.  They will use up all of their time control.  The real question was, "Would they get an endgame and maximize their increment as well?"

Of course, this is one of those games where both players had great positions to win the game but failed to find the best move.  So, in the end, the game played out into a drawn endgame, which is what Brian had wanted all along.

Here is the position where Brian could have shortened the game if only he had been looking for wins.

Black to move
