Game Of The Week

This weekend I played in the Colorado Springs Open. I was hoping to get a good game from the tournament to publish this week, but I was not really fond of any of my games. I asked Randy Canney for one of his, but I just received a couple from him today and won’t have time to Fritz them until next week. So, you have that to look forward to.

Game Of The Week

This week’s game comes from the Colorado Springs Open. I mentioned last week that Randy Canney had sent me two of his games from the tournament. So, I had to decide which one I was going to publish.

Randy was once a Senior Life Master (over 2400), which means...

Game Of The Week

The nice thing about the Colorado Springs Open is that you get to play a wide range of opponents. In my first round, I played against a 1200. In the second round, I played someone 1000 points higher.

Of course, as is my custom, I beat the people I was higher rated than and lost to the one I was lower ...

Gimme Three Points

Game Of The Week

A while back I wrote about all the experts I’ve beaten before. There was only three at the time, and I am hoping it stays that way. You see, my criteria for determining whether I counted a win was based on the opponent’s USCF rating being at least 2000 at the time the game was played. So, when I beat Jason Caldwell last year (4/12/05) when hi...

Game Of The Week

This week’s game comes from one of the great names in chess. I had to think of a couple of names from the chess scene just to get paired in this week’s event at the club. I learned that I would not be a very good contestant on Family Feud, as I froze on the female name. I finally came up with Katie Roberts-Hoffman and was paired against Jerry...

Game Of The Week

This week’s game is another example of the close-but-no-cigar ratings dilemma I mentioned a couple weeks ago when I beat National Master Josh Bloomer at a rating of 2197 (http://csche...

All Tim, All The Time!

Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from a loyal reader, Tim Brennan. He used to be the editor of the Colorado Chess Informant. I guess, being the editor for a while, he understands the loneliness of the chess news publisher.

He often sends me comments back letting me know what he enjoyed about the newsletter. Usu...

Game Of The Week

I chose this week’s game mainly because it occurred exactly eight years ago today. Of course, it didn’t hurt that it was a game I won and also my 8th biggest upset. Back then, I didn’t really think much about the win as I was new to nationally rated chess and didn’t quite understand much about the ratings.

Game Of The Week

I wasn’t feeling too well these past couple of days and thought about bagging the newsletter for this week. But, in between my countless trips to the restroom, I saw a show called Drive Thru History about the dedication of the Persian equivalent of the Pony Express riders:

Game Of The Week

Back when I was playing a ton of blitz games to improve my chess instead of actually reading some chess books, I would make all kinds of mistakes in the first few moves. As I fell into all kinds of traps and swindles, I would make a mental note and learn to avoid them in the future.

So, I learned open...

Game Of The Week

Sometimes picking a game to publish is easy. Most times it is not. If someone sends in a game, that makes it easy. But usually I have to make an effort to get someone else’s game. I have to copy the score sheet myself or explain to the person how to email a PGN file.

So typically, at the end of ...

Loser's Privilege

Game Of The Week

This week’s game was an easy one to choose. First, it comes from someone other than me. Second, it comes from the event at the club this week. Third, it comes from someone who had a loss published by me earlier.

When I started publishing chess games, I made a promise to the losers that I would use a game of their ...

Game Of The Week

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day. As is my custom, I visited Ft. Logan National Cemetery and decorated my grandfather’s grave with flowers.

Also, it is about this time of year that I watch Patton, which is my favorite war movie. My grandfather served under Patton, and...

Game Of The Week

One of my favorite chess players is Buck Buchanan. He has been running the chess club since I have been coming (with help), he directs the main tournaments I play in (Colorado Springs Open, Pikes Peak Open, and Winter Springs Open), and he got me involved in promoting chess (Renaissance Festival and Territory Days). He is also one of the top three most c...

Game Of The Week

This weekend I played in the Southern Colorado Open, and yes, Renae did see me there. Since she had a good tournament, winning 2nd place in the reserve section, I asked her if she had a good win to replace the one I rejected. She said she would send me one, but I haven’t gotten anything as of yet.

Game Of The Week

Last year, I published a loss of mine to my father as part of his father's day gift. He wasn't too thrilled about my choice of games, but I thought I would continue the tradition, only with one of his choices this year.

Game Of The Week

This week’s game comes from the June Mating Games Tournament that was held at the CSCC the past two weeks.

The first week, I showed up late and Virgil McGuire says to me, as I walk in the door, “I have started your clock already.” I scrambled to his board, which is alwa...

Game Of The Week

This week I am finally getting to the game I mentioned in the June 13th newsletter that I forgot to enter into Fritz. It is from Dean Brown who gave me the game back on the sixth of June, but was actually played on the seventh of May during the Wyoming Open. I think he was just then putting it into his computer so he was a month beh...

Remembering Al Ufer

Game Of The Week

It is one year ago today, since Al Ufer passed away. Last year, I asked people for games they played with Al, and I still had some left over. With nothing going on at the club this week, it seemed a fitting time to remember Al.

One of the people to respond was...
